St. Luke’s Hospice has a challenging year ahead; aiming to raise £4m to keep the hospice running and another £5m to build a new in patient care unit. The Hospice provides essential care for over 1400 adults with terminal illnesses and gives vital support to their families all free of charge. To help raise money and awareness about the Hospice we have asked local businesses to come up with innovative fundraising challenges. Sheffield- based online travel agent alpharooms.com  has come up with themed quiz to test the nation’s leap year knowledge. The competition will not only raise national awareness for St Luke’s Hospice, but entrants will be in with a chance of winning a sun filled holiday for two to the glorious island of Ibiza. Taylor&Emmet Duo Step Up Probate Credentials

Two probate specialists from Sheffield solicitors, Taylor&Emmet LLP, have added formal qualifications in managing trusts and estates to their wealth of professional knowledge. Nichola Carmichael and Hannah Montague have achieved a diploma from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), the world’s leading professional body in this field. Membership of STEP recognises Nichola and Hannah’s skills in the administration, taxation and accounting of trusts and estates and ranks them among the most experienced and qualified practitioners in the industry. Taking approximately two years to complete, the diploma demonstrates the duo’s technical proficiency and understanding of complex wills, trusts and estate planning documentation. His business skills have earned him three Queen's awards for innovation and export, along with the title ‘South Yorkshire Businessman of the Year’. And, at the age of 74, Doug is now a published novelist. His new book, The Storm Bringer, is a tale he has long wanted to tell, based partly on his time in Libya as an army officer on national service half a century ago. His publisher describes the book as ‘a taut thriller, an intriguing tale of love, power and vengeance’. HSBC Launches £4 Billion International Trade Fund for SMEs

The HSBC International SME Fund is designed to support the growth of small and medium-sized UK businesses that trade internationally. Through the scheme, HSBC will provide credit to companies as a means for them to extend their operations abroad. The bank believes that even the smallest businesses are likely to become multinational in the future. A total of £4 billion worth of credit will be available through the scheme. Individual funding allocations to be awarded per applicant have yet to be stipulated. UK-based small and medium-sized enterprises that are planning to trade or expand their operations in emerging international markets such as India and China may apply. The Fund will be available to those businesses with a turnover of up to £25 million. A for Appointments has more than tripled the size of its office space, whilst remaining in the heart of the city, thanks to Taylor&Emmet’s commercial property expert, Rachel Houghton. Rachel negotiated a new lease on 2,396 square feet premises in Sheffield’s Townhead Street for A for Appointments, improving its high street presence and facilitating plans to expand and diversify into other areas, such as training. Health and Safety Industry Gather in Sheffield City Region

More than 80 business leaders from across the Sheffield City Region attended an inaugural Health and Safety Conference. Organised by the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and staged at Brinsworth Academy of Engineering in Rotherham, the conference looked at behavioural safety and alterations to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Guest speakers included Paul Spurrier, head of operations for Yorkshire and the Humber Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Dr John Herbert, managing director of Peak HSE Ltd, a health, safety and environmental consultancy based in Sheffield. David Egan, Partner in the Regulatory and Criminal Investigations group at Irwin Mitchell LLP provided an update on legal and legislative issues. The event also included case-studies from Samantha Crehan, health and safety manager at Sheffield Forgemasters International and Pat Smith, general manager at Don Valley Stadium. Building Society Marks New Branch Opening by Helping the ‘Homeless’

Nottingham Building Society Charitable Foundation presented a cheque to St Vincent’s Furniture Store for £1250.00. The money will help homeless people move into their new-found homes. The picture shows Ralph Dickins receiving the cheque from Nottingham Building Society Manager Tricia Cater with the Lord Mayor Sylvia Dunkley who officially opened their new branch. The Society made St Vincent’s their charity of the year in 2012. The Furniture Store are celebrating their 25th Anniversary, since they opened in 1987 over 65,000 people in Sheffield have benefitted from their help in coming out of homelessness.

A clinical negligence specialist from leading Sheffield solicitors, Taylor&Emmet LLP, has received official recognition of his skills from industry heavyweight, The Law Society. Paul Fouad is the latest member of Taylor&Emmet’s team to be accepted onto the Clinical Negligence Accreditation Scheme – a mark of quality in this area of legal practice. To achieve membership of the panel, Paul had to demonstrate that he is experienced in handling high value cases and that he has and will continue to maintain a first class level of knowledge and skills in the area of clinical negligence. His application was reviewed by existing members of the scheme and will be re-assessed every five years. Jeremy Browne MP, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, is the latest guest speaker to be announced for the Global Manufacturing Festival. Liberal Democrat Mr Browne, who has also been Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, has worked in the private sector in finance and global communications. He will speak to more than 400 delegates at the festival’s convention and trade show which will take place in Sheffield on March 22.
