Get involved in a Roundabout way!

Looking for your next charity partnership? If you’re wanting to support a local charity which is challenging one of the major social issues of our time, then Roundabout is the charity for you.

We want to make sure that no young person has to sleep rough in South Yorkshire. Working across Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster to end the cycle of youth homelessness, we currently give life changing support to over 250 young people every day.

A partnership with you could make such a difference to young people like Zane who is currently supported at our 27 bed hostel in Sheffield. Zane became homeless when he was kicked out after the relationship with his Mum deteriorated. He slept on the streets before coming to Roundabout for help, and he’s now a Peer Educator for the charity, going into schools to hold homeless education lessons for other young people.

Shauna_GroupLiving-(1)“I’ve been here for a couple of months and Roundabout’s staff really help you while you’re living here. When I turned up I had no clue how to do anything – I couldn’t even use their washing machine or cook a meal! They hold life skills sessions here to help you learn everything you need to know to be able to look after yourself. I’ll forever be grateful to Roundabout for all their help and support. They’ve given me a roof over my head, have made me feel safe and are making sure I’m on the right path to independence. I can’t wait to have a place of my own but until then, I’m determined to help other young people out there avoid experiencing homelessness.”

Roundabout wants to prevent a young person from having to experience homelessness and believes that the best place a young person can be is at home, as long as it’s safe. Our Homeless Prevention service runs drop-in advice and also mediation sessions to help rebuild relationships that may be breaking down at home. Rebecca* received mediation which helped her rebuild relationships in her family:

“I used mediation to help with my relationship with my parents. I went on my own initially, and then Roundabout spoke with my parents individually too. Roundabout helped me make sense of the situation – to understand my feelings and my parents’ feelings too.

There has been lasting change with my mum and my relationship with my dad is improving gradually. I feel that I have a mother-daughter relationship now, and I would recommend Roundabout mediation to others who require help.”

Shauna found herself homeless at 17 after family relationships became strained following the death of her mother. She has since turned her life around and has gained full-time employment as a Roundabout Support Worker!

“The reason I wanted to start working with young people was mainly due to the support I’ve had from staff at Roundabout. The help I’ve received has been phenomenal and changed my mind set towards professionals! Since receiving support from Roundabout whether it be needing a roof over my head or just someone to talk to, I’ve been inspired to make a difference to other young people, just like my key workers did for me. Whilst working at Roundabout I have learnt so much and I’m still continuing to learn too! Watching the young people at our Group Living project learn new skills and move on is so rewarding. Just knowing I’m helping to make a difference in their lives is why I love my job.”
