An Economic Summit with a new name, new speaker line-up and a new venue will return to Sheffield in June after a highly successful inaugural event last year.

‘RE:Inventing the City – The International Business and Economy Summit 2008’ is attracting a line-up of international and regional speakers.

It has already secured the services of Greg Clark, a leading international facilitator on making cities and regions work, while guests will receive a morning keynote speech from Government Minister Yvette Cooper.

Guest speakers for 2008 include Steve Inch of Glasgow & Edinburgh Economic Development, Kelly Lee of Innovation Philadelphia, Scott Chapman of Melbourne City Council and Paolo Verri, Italia 150 – Turin.

Tom Riordan Chief Executive of Yorkshire Forward and Ian Bromley Chief Executive of Creative Sheffield, who both addressed the conference last year, return.

Last year’s first ever Economic Summit has proved to be a springboard for this year’s Sheffield City Hall event on June 19th backed by The Star.

Chamber head of business development Paul Reeves said: “The fact that top level speakers wanted to come to our city and be actively involved in 2007 was a big sign of just how far Sheffield has progressed.

“That some want to return and new faces are signing up to get involved this year really emphasises how important this flagship event has become.

“The 2007 summit packed a real punch - the Chamber viewed it as one of the city’s most significant events - and we believe RE:Inventing the City will have just as much clout.”

RE:Inventing the City is in partnership with Creative Sheffield and Sheffield City Council.

Creative Sheffield’s chief executive Ian Bromley said: “Sheffield has been independently benchmarked as the UK's most cost-effective business location in terms of property and staff costs and is a city that is building an international reputation for innovation and quality across a growing spectrum of business and technology specialisms.

“It is important the city business region makes the most of forums like RE:Inventing the City and utilises this event as an opportunity to reflect as well as focus attention on continuing this momentum.”

The morning conference theme will be centred on the Economic Masterplan that will drive Sheffield’s regeneration forward over the next 15 years, while the afternoon sessions will focus on the skills that underpin a modern city economy.

Ending on a high note, the day-long conference will end with a ‘Celebration of Sheffield’ dinner.
