Two names from the worlds of politics and the media have been announced as the latest speakers to join the line-up at one of the region’s most important business events.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg and GMTV Chairman Clive Jones CBE will address delegates at the ‘RE:Inventing the City – The International Business and Economy Summit 2008’ event.

Both men are both well-connected with the city business region - Nick Clegg is MP for Sheffield Hallam while, before embarking on his TV career, Clive Jones worked as a journalist for the Yorkshire Post and was also the news editor of the former Sheffield Morning Telegraph.

Mr Clegg is a former journalist, development aid and trade expert and MEP who has also lectured part time at Sheffield and Cambridge Universities. He was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats in December last year, pledging to marry the party’s twin traditions of economic and social liberalism to deliver social justice.

Mr Jones began his career on the newsdesk of Yorkshire Television after eight years in newspapers. Now Chairman of Britain's most popular Breakfast television station GMTV, he is also editorial strategy adviser to ITV and visiting Professor in Journalism, Media and Culture at Cardiff University. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Television Society (RTS) in 1995 and last year landed RTS’ highest award, its gold medal, for his outstanding contribution to British television.

The MP and the media man are the most recent additions to a line-up of speakers which includes Government Minister Yvette Cooper, Kelly Lee of Innovation Philadelphia, Scott Chapman of Melbourne City Council and Greg Clark, a leading international facilitator on making cities and regions work.

A Sheffield Chamber of Commerce event, ‘RE:Inventing the City’ will be hosted in partnership with Creative Sheffield and Sheffield City Council. Held at Sheffield City Hall on June 19th, it follows last year’s highly successful inaugural Economic Summit event which attracted more than 150 delegates and an equally national and international panel of speakers.

Chamber head of business development Paul Reeves said: “We’re very pleased that ‘RE:Inventing the City is continuing to attract big names. Both Nick and Clive will bring their own unique take on business success and development from their political and media backgrounds which will lend an interesting angle to the summit event. And after the Liberal Democrats’ success in the recent local elections, it is very timely to have Party Leader Nick Clegg address the audience during a changing and important time for Sheffield’s economy.”

Paul added: “The conference will be centred around the Economic Masterplan that will drive Sheffield’s regeneration forward over the next 15 years and will involve interactive participation from the audience, so it is essential that people who wish to have their say in the future of Sheffield attend this event.”

Ending on a high note, the day-long conference will end with a ‘Celebration of Sheffield’ dinner.
