As England’s first anniversary of smoke-free pubs and workplaces approaches, the Chamber is reminding members about the help available for its employees who want stop smoking.

To coincide with the smokefree anniversary, a Stop Smoking Advisor is available to provide on-site stop smoking support for Sheffield sites.

Why should employers take part?

· Stopping smoking is the single biggest change an individual can make to improve their health.  About 70% of smokers are considering quitting and support to do this at work could kick-start their quit attempt.

· By providing help at work, employers are providing a convenient and supportive environment, which many employees who have used the scheme so far have stated has been the key to their quitting success.

· Although your workplace may have a ‘No Smoking’ policy, some of your staff who are smokers may have difficulty getting through a day without smoking.

· Research suggests that in the UK, smoking breaks typically account for £48,000 of lost time annually for every 100 employees (around 30 of whom will typically be smokers).

· It is also well documented that smokers are more likely to be absent from work with illnesses than non-smokers.

The sessions take place for up to an hour each week in a 3 week lead up to a quit and for a month of support afterwards (total 7 weeks).  They offer medication on prescription, and advice on preventing cravings, breaking habits, avoiding weight gain, ways to deal with stress, as well as support to succeed.
