Sheffield Chamber of Commerce has played a key representative role in Sheffield United ‘Campaign for Fairness’

The Blades are seeking to highlight the unfair way in which the Premier League dealt with West Ham United's contract with Carlos Tevez.

The club sent a small delegation to Brussels to brief European Commission officials. The delegation, led by United Chief Executive Jason Rockett, included Chamber Chief Executive Nigel Tomlinson, who earlier met with MPs in Westminster to brief on the situation.

Mr Tomlinson said: "We were glad we could add value.  As the voice of business in Sheffield, representation is an important aspect of what we can bring for our members.

"Here we have a situation where a business - vital to the economy of the city - has been unjustly treated and, in effect, has lost a £50m contract.

"We were delighted Sheffield United felt we could help in the briefing process - it was a team effort," said Mr Tomlinson.

Sheffield United chief executive Jason Rockett said: "The events in Westminster and Brussels provided an important profile for the club's Campaign for Fairness.  I cannot thank the Chamber enough for taking time out to help deliver our Campaign for Fairness message.

  • Last week a Premier League arbitration hearing considered United's argument that a Premier League Independent Commission decision to fine West Ham rather than deduct points for their role in the signings of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano was irrational and that the punishment did not fit the crime. The tribunal is due to give its ruling before the end of this month.
