Fledgling Sheffield IT experts Deborah Adshead and Jessica Zeun have made a flying start to business, with the help of one of the region’s leading business start-up support agencies.
City-based IT solutions company JD Approach was established by Deborah and Jessica two years ago. Now the company is growing so fast the entrepreneurs are taking on new staff, moving to new premises and winning a string of prestigious contracts.
Deborah said: "We've just employed one new member of staff, a graduate technician, and are taking on another new starter this summer, so things are going pretty well. In just a few short months we have gone from working purely for ourselves to becoming fully fledged employers with three members of staff in total. "This has thrown up new challenges which we are gradually getting to grips with. One of the most urgent issues has been space, which is why we've moved our HQ to the Gateway business centre near Don Valley Stadium. The offices are excellent, easily accessible and there's plenty of room for us to expand further in the future. "Which is great, because we are attracting new contracts every week. Last year we worked with A4E to project manage their IT requirements when setting up two new offices in Paris. It was a prestigious contract, brilliant experience and shows just how far we've come. There are plenty more good opportunities like this in the pipeline." JD Approach provide well managed IT services and support to small businesses, offering a one-stop shop to manage assistance for a wide range of business solutions. Now the company is working with Sheffield Enterprise Agency (SENTA) to help other small businesses with their unique brand of IT support. Deborah said: "We wouldn't have grown so fast, so quickly without the help of SENTA. Although we're now nearly two years old, we still have regular contact with our business advisors Duncan Scott and Manjit Dosanjh who have both helped us enormously. The level of advice they've offered us has been first class. "The main thing SENTA helped us out with initially was advice on cash flow and financial management- old teething problems regularly associated with going it alone and setting up your own business. "Now we are working with SENTA to help to help other small businesses like ourselves through the provision of professional IT support services." The company's rapid success story has been so great; it is being featured as a case study in a new DVD for Business Link South Yorkshire (BLSY) which will promote business enterprise in Yorkshire and Humber. Deborah said: "The future is certainly looking bright. We're working closely with our local chambers of commerce and Business Link South Yorkshire which is a great experience and has given us lots of new leads. "We've got some big goals and look forward to the day we are able to expand further, not just in Sheffield but also elsewhere within the region. But thanks to advice from our SENTA business advisors Duncan and Manjit, we know we've got to walk before we can run and have a very clear plan for progression." SENTA is part of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and provides fully integrated support to new business start-ups and businesses up to two years old. Its start-up programme is funded by Yorkshire Forward under contract with Business Link South Yorkshire. SENTA Enterprise Director Sandra Edwards said: "JD Approach are a real success story for the city. They are still young, but they are growing fast and have given themselves every chance of success. We wish them luck for the future and hope that, together, we can offer targeted support to small businesses in the region."
