Napoleon said that the British are a nation of shopkeepers; but is this still true?  With more than five local shops closing every single day, and the independent shop on the high street predicted to be gone by 2015, will we become a nation of supermarkets instead? So the small shop has to change, has to fight to survive.

Each 30-minute episode will be a bright and breezy look at independent shops on the high street.  Geoff Burch, our business guru will take existing businesses that aren’t reaching their full potential and show them how to be the best they can be.

Billed as Europe’s number one business speaker and author, Geoff's credentials are impressive. During a career that spans more than two decades, he's worked extensively with the world's leading blue chip companies. Geoff isn’t your standard retail consultant.  Humorous and lighthearted in style, he gets straight to the heart of the problem and is direct with his advice.  His CV includes Boots the chemist, Barclay’s Bank, Sainsbury’s, Yate’s Wine Lodge, BT, Asda and Lloyd’s TSB, to name but a few.

Geoff will look at three different shops in one town, getting to grips with business basics, shop know-how and customer care. Then through simple but effective techniques we will aim to get the best out of the shops, their window displays, layout and staff and selling techniques. The changes we make will be small scale and achievable, but have an impact on the staff, customers and ultimately the tills.

We’ll also take a closer look at how the larger main street shops work and where applicable take one of our shop owners along to learn from the Big Boys.

Four weeks after Geoff has given the retailers his tips for a brighter future, he will return to see what, if any, changes the retailers have made and the impact it has had on their business.
