An event is being held to help city businesses recovering from the aftermath of June’s floods. Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Environment Agency, Creative Sheffield, Sheffield City Council and Yorkshire Forward and hosted by Sheffield University, is offering the business community the opportunity to discuss flood-related matters with people in the know, at the ‘Learning from the Floods’ breakfast meeting.
The event, organised by the Chamber’s South Yorkshire Green Business Club, in association with Sheffield Property and Regeneration Committee (SPARC), will be a chance to engage in constructive dialogue with guest speakers John Charlton from Sheffield City Council and Peter Holmes from the Environment Agency.
The proposed early warning system, holistic and specific flood defences, plus future concerns regarding insurance are all topics to be covered on the agenda.
Organisers aim to address questions such as: "Is my business in the flood zone?", "How do I get on the flood warning system?", "What flood-relevant responsibilities do riverside companies have?", and "How can I build my company's flood resilience?"
Sheffield Chamber’s policy and representation manager Helen Rana said: “There is no denying the scale of the impact the flooding earlier this year has caused Sheffield, South Yorkshire and the greater Yorkshire and Humberside region.
“It is still apparent in the form of damaged walls, dried vegetation on the braches of trees lining the rivers and silty footpaths.
“More significant for the region, though, is the impact on recovering businesses and the economy. The financial cost of rebuilding, addressing customer concerns and dealing with insurance claims are still issues for some local businesses.”
The event will be held at the Douglas Knoop Centre, Humanities Research Centre, on Gell Street on Friday 30 November from 8.30am. The event will include a breakfast buffet and lunch.
