Sheffield Chamber is encouraging the business community to ‘close the book’ on poor staff literacy skills.

The National Year of Reading (NYR) campaign in Sheffield will be launched in April, and the Chamber is supporting the initiative by aiming to get employers to become the authors of their own business success.

The Chamber wants employers to consider the importance of reading skills in the workplace and make 2008 the year they address any gaps in reading standards in their organisation.

The Sheffield campaign’s vision is ‘to develop life-long readers who will contribute to the city’s regeneration and well-being’, encouraging reading across the whole city by working with schools, libraries, businesses and communities. A series of city events to tie in with the campaign begins next month (April) and will run until the end of the year.

Chamber policy and representation manager Helen Rana said:
“Reading skills affect every area of the workplace. Bosses need to ensure staff can understand and follow a range of written materials from simple written instructions to complex reports correctly, as well as benefit fully from modern resources such as websites and the internet.

“Even something as crucial as a Health and Safety notice relies heavily on reading skills.

“The Chamber is therefore very interested in supporting activities which improve people’s reading levels in workplaces, as people who read well can work more effectively and enjoy better career prospects.

“This in turn enables companies to keep developing and upgrading their businesses, including taking on new technology.”

The NYR is a year-long celebration of reading, in all its forms. It aims to help build a greater national passion for reading in England – for children, families and adult learners alike.
