University Technical College 2
A Second University Technical College for Sheffield City Region
Every parent wants their child to get a satisfying job that helps them reach their potential. Every employer in growth sectors of our economy needs skilled staff. That’s why a group of the region’s leading employers have come together with the region’s two Universities to propose a second University Technical College for Sheffield City Region.
University Technical Colleges (UTCs) have opened all over the country, funded by the Department for Education, offering free, high quality technical and academic study for young people who are really interested in following particular career paths or pursuing particular subject areas from the age of 14 or 16.
UTC Sheffield specialising in Engineering & Manufacturing and Creative & Digital Industries, opened its doors in September 2013 with 220 students and is going from strength to strength. Now there is a proposal for a second UTC specialising in Human Sciences and Computing.
Students will study a combination of high quality technical qualifications in Healthcare Sciences, Sports Science and Computing alongside GCSEs and A Levels. These specialisms have been chosen because of the huge demand that lies ahead for talented, versatile individuals able to support radical developments in health services and the growth of new industries as the nation seizes the opportunities offered by technical advances to tackle the demands of an ageing, less active population.
UTC 2 Sheffield will be located in a brand new purpose-built £10m building on the visionary new Olympic Legacy Park in the Don Valley between Rotherham and Sheffield. The Olympic Legacy Park is a £55m project bringing together public and private funding for a hub of outstanding sporting venues alongside top quality healthcare and sports research facilities. The opportunities for learning in UTC 2’s specialisms will be unparalleled in the UK.

A six-week consultation period to collect feedback and discuss the future of UTC 2 Sheffield begins on 28 January 2015 and runs through to 20 March 2015.
This is your opportunity to help us shape UTC 2 Sheffield and ensure that it serves the young people, parents and carers, educational community and employers of Sheffield and its surrounding area. The Trust will look for opportunities to discuss UTC 2 Sheffield face to face and will happily accept invitations to meetings.
