First aid courses for staff from Sheffield solicitors Ashton Morton Slack are proving to be as easy as ABC...

Four staff have qualified in important aspects of first aid, including the life-preserving ABC procedure of checking Airway, Breathing and Circulation, on courses run by Chamber Training Services (CTS), the training arm of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce.

Three-year validation

On successful completion of the CTS four-day course, which covers issues such as resuscitation and circulation, recovery position, initial assessment, priorities of treatment and managing an incident action plan, delegates are awarded the First Aid at Work Certificate which is valid for three years.

CTS also run a one-day emergency first aid course aimed at providing appointed persons with the information needed to deal with an accident, incident or sudden illness situation and also a two-day refresher/requalifier course.

Chamber business development executive Dale Robinson said: "It is, of course, a legal requirement for employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work.

"The regulations apply to all workplaces, including those with five or fewer employees, and the CTS courses are designed to ensure that all delegates go away with a thorough knowledge of first-aid matters and the experience to put it into practice."

Safety and well-being paramount

Margaret Draguisky, office manager of Ashton Morton Slack (AMS), of North Church Street, Sheffield, said: "The safety and well-being of our staff is of paramount importance at AMS. Thanks to the CTS course, we can now say with confidence that we will always have a first-aider on hand should the need arise."
