From Recession to Recovery

Today I was invited to speak about Sheffield's take on the Local Government Association's 'From Recession to Recovery: The Local Dimension' report on both Hallam FM and Radio Sheffield and pulled out some key facts it highlights. The first is that our region is relatively well positioned to weather the economic storm, especially compared to areas like London and the South East. The second echoes something we've been saying for a while - that the whole country is not being affected by the economic downturn in the same way.

Some sectors in our city are thriving and actually looking to take on additional skilled employees, and manufacturers are bucking the national trend and telling us that their order books are full. Chesterfield Special Cylinders is an excellent example of a company winning national recognition for their exporting successes. Also, the creative and digital sector is still growing rapidly - I saw in the Sheffield Star today that digital company Technophobia has just launched a new website to help people find the most suitable and cost-effective loan.

In other words, Sheffield is a very different landscape than that during the 1990-1992 recession - the economy today is based on a broad range of diverse sectors, which should reduce the negative impact on any one area.
