Finalists announced for Sheffield Business Awards

A record number of entries has yielded an outstanding shortlist for this year's Sheffield Business Awards. The prestigious honours, organised by Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, celebrate the cream of the city's business community and promise to be the most hotly contested yet.

The shortlisted companies, of all sizes and from all sectors, will find out if they have won one of the coveted awards at a glittering celebration night on Thursday, 4 December at Ponds Forge ISC, Sheffield.

A total of 47 companies make up the finalists in 13 categories of the awards sponsored by BiG Make it Your Business and The Environment Agency

A number of companies feature in more than one award category. They include Macalloy, SEAMS Ltd, Davy Markham Limited and Williams Brothers.

Hotly contested

The two awards for individuals are set to be hotly contested. In the running for the Sheffield Hallam University Young Business Person of the Year Award are:

Jamie Cartwright, Managing Director and founder of pioneering new fitness centre Ladyzone
Bettina Yarde, Managing Director of Morgan Dias Immigration Consultants Ltd., which provides specialist immigration- related services
Tristan Cowell, Managing Director of IC Innovations, suppliers of a range of innovative products to High Street retailers.

In the Rensburg Sheppards Business Person of the Year Award three well-known individuals are competing for the coveted title. They are:

Jo Haigh from leading UK's accountancy and financial management practice Martin Greene Rayden
Susan Battersby, Managing Director of Williams Fasteners, suppliers of industrial fasteners and allied products
David Heugh, from Freeman College (part of the Ruskin Mill Educational Trust Ltd), a centre of excellence for young people with autistic spectrum disorders.

Paul Reeves, Director of Business Development at the Chamber, said: "This event is now firmly established as the city's premier showcase of business achievement. Whilst some entrants will be disappointed to have missed out, we've been informed that there was an extremely high standard of applications this year, forcing the judges to make a lot of difficult decisions. Now the finalists have a nervous wait to find out who will win on the night."

Jon Culshaw to compere

Impressionist and comedian Jon Culshaw, will compere the glitzy awards ceremony. The television star will help hand out the trophies during the evening, which will also include a four course dinner, live band and disco.

Jon is renowned for his work with Radio 1's Chris Moyles, Dead Ringers and Spitting Image where he came to fame with more than 40 voice impressions of personalities including the then Prime Minister John Major.

He hit the headlines in 1998 while working for a radio station. Impersonating Tory leader William Hague, he succeeded in contacting 10 Downing Street where he was put through to Prime Minister Tony Blair and had a conversation with him.

Chamber chief executive Nigel Tomlinson said: "Jon's impressions have delighted so many people over the years and we are excited that he is compering our prestigious event. He is a huge success in his own field and knows all about achieving so he will be in good company on the night."

Sheffield Business Awards 2008 Winners

After a record number of entries, more than 40 companies and individuals made the shortlist for the 13 categories in the Awards, organised by Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by BiG Make It Your Business and The Environment Agency.

Before a capacity audience at SIV's Ponds Forge, the Awards celebrated the cream of the city's business community. Impressionist and comedian Jon Culshaw who compered the event made sure the business community's voice was heard after treating the audience to a selection of his famous impressions including Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, George Bush and Russell Crowe.

It was double success for MyJobGroup Ltd who won the HSBC Outstanding Business of the Year title as well as the Sheffield Technology Parks Creative and Digital Industries Innovation Award.

DavyMarkham Limited also came out on top in two categories - another indication that Sheffield still has a strong manufacturing base. And after taking the Sales & Customer Service Award for the past two years, Williams Brothers had a taste of repeat success after taking home the 2008 City Strategy Excellence in Skills Award.

Jamie Cartwright, the driving force behind the Ladyzone fitness centres, took one of the night's top individual titles - the Sheffield Hallam University Young Business Person of the Year Award. Meanwhile, David Heugh, one of the city's most popular business figures, was rewarded for his outstanding contributions at Freeman College by being recognised as the Rensburg Sheppards Business Person of the Year.

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Nigel Tomlinson said: "The night showcased that, despite the current difficult economic times, Sheffield still has at its core businesses and individuals who are real driving forces, delivering outstanding performances day after day, year after year."

‘Outstanding' MyJobGroup.co.uk scoop top Award

MyJobGroup.co.uk scooped two prizes at the 2008 Sheffield Business Awards, including the ‘Outstanding Business of the Year' Award.

The glitzy event, held at Ponds Forge and hosted by celebrity impressionist John Culshaw recognised the leading businesses in the city, with thirteen prizes up for grabs.

Hillsborough based MyJobGroup.co.uk collected the "Creative & Digital Industries Award" in addition to the Business of the Year prize, which for the first time was decided by a public vote.

Sheffield Business Awards 2009

Sheffield's growing and varied commercial expertise will be brought together at a unique event to celebrate business success.

The 2009 Sheffield Business Awards, organised by the city's Chamber of Commerce, is set to be the biggest to date after adding a further two categories - an Excellence in Sports Services award and the Healthy Business award.

The Awards, which this year have 15 categories, will be held at the Ponds Forge International Centre on December 3 and is expected to attract an audience of more than 1,000 people from all sectors of the Sheffield business community.

In 2008 the event attracted a record number of entries, with more than 40 companies and individuals shortlisted in the 13 categories.

MyJobGroup Ltd won the HSBC Outstanding Business of the Year title as well as the Sheffield Technology Parks Creative and Digital Industries Innovation Award, while DavyMarkham also came out on top in two accolades.

David Heugh was recognised as the Rensburg Sheppards Business Person of the Year and Jamie Cartwright, the driving force behind the Ladyzone fitness centres, took the Sheffield Hallam University Young Business Person of the Year Award.

Sheffield Chamber chief executive Nigel Tomlinson said: "The Sheffield Business Awards is firmly recognised as the ultimate must attend end of year event which celebrates business success in the city region.

"This year the awards are going to be bigger and better than ever before, with more categories and extra opportunities for even more businesses to get involved.

"Sport and health are two key and growing sectors that are taking Sheffield's name to a national and international audience, the staging of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in Sheffield this year is an example of this.

"We had a terrific response from businesses last year and we are hoping for a similar reaction this time around.

"We all know that this past year has been a difficult time for a number of companies, but we are equally aware of many businesses which are still achieving great success despite the economic climate.

"During any downturn events like this are even more important to boost optimism and offer an opportunity to showcase how Sheffield is beating the recession."

Sheffield City Council leader Cllr Paul Scriven will be one of the guest speakers. He said: "Sheffield has recently been acknowledged as a city which is going the extra mile in what has been a difficult financial year for many cities in terms of business growth.

"At the council we want to do everything we can to support local businesses. We've introduced a ‘Buy Local' policy to encourage the both businesses and residents to use local suppliers and support the local economy. We've also set up a First Point for Business, to help people who are setting up a business to cut through the usual council red tape. This means that the previous six week process now takes just half a day!

"It's also important that we celebrate the achievements of local businesses and business people and showcase the entrepreneurial talents of the city. We want to be a city where business and enterprise really does matter and helps to create and secure local jobs."
