Martin had a career in the legal profession spanning over 30 years. He was a partner at international law firm CMS (formerly Nabarro LLP) and based in the firms Sheffield office. He worked nationally and internationally advising a range of clients - FTSE Companies, Corporates, Local Authorities and Government Departments in the infrastructure, construction, property and energy sectors.
Following his retirement from the legal profession in April 2018 he became a director of AESSEAL plc and Vulcan Engineering Ltd. AESSEAL is a manufacturing company specialising in the design and manufacture of mechanical seals and support systems. The business operates from 203 locations in 104 countries, including 9 manufacturing and 58 repair locations.
Martin is Chair of the Sheffield Property Association (the S-PA), an independent association of individuals and organisations with an interest in land, property and development in Sheffield and the City Region. The S-PA was forged in the city as the only formally constituted Property Association outside of London.
Martin is Co-Chair of the Sheffield City Growth Board, a collaboration and partnership working to drive forward a strong and inclusive city economy at the heart of a successful and prosperous Sheffield City Region.
He is also Vice-Chair of the Sheffield Cultural Collective, an organisation tasked with developing a culture strategy for the city.
Martin has a broad portfolio of charitable and voluntary work as a trustee of St Luke’s Hospice, The Burton Street Foundation, Whirlow Hall Farm Trust and The Herbert Hughes Memorial Fund.
Between 2015 and 2018 Martin served a three year term as a private sector board member of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and Transport for the North Partnership Board.
Martin is the High Sheriff of the County of South Yorkshire nominate for the Year 2021/22.
