Hot Topic

This event’s hot topic will focus on all thing’s finance, specifically UK-EU VAT and global foreign exchange trends.

Since the UK left the EU single market and customs union, one of the most complicated issues concerning importers, exporters and cross trade conditions has been that of VAT payments.

  • Who pays what?
  • How do I reclaim the VAT I paid to the EU tax authority?
  • Why can’t I do triangulation business anymore?
  • Do I really need to set up a VAT registered company in one or more EU countries?
  • Will IOSS affect my business?

Questions go on... And the net effect of not understand the rules could cost your company £000’s.

That is why we are delighted to have teamed up with our long-term sponsor UHY Hacker Young to provide vital support to businesses. Michelle Dale, an indirect tax specialist and a leading figure in UK-EU VAT, will join us at the event to provide detailed information and answers to your critical questions.

In addition, your business needs to be aware that Foreign Exchange rates are set to become much more volatile as global markets start to recover from the pandemic, Brexit and the deep-seated issues relating to the global economy. Also joining the event, we will welcome Andy Dobson of moneycorp. Andy has over 25 years experience working in global FX markets and will explain how without first-rate FX management, £000’s can be gained or lost.

Nick Patrick
Head of International Trade at Sheffield International Trade Centre.

Nick started out working in manufacturing in the chemical industry. After graduating at university, he moved to Cape Town, South Africa to take up a position as technical production manager in a large factory.

Moving to Johannesburg he became the technical and commercial agent for a UK chemical company, who subsequently asked him to return to the UK to help develop their global trade. The brief, to expand existing global business and develop new markets. With his team of technical/commercial staff, they supported and expanded their global agents and distributor network to all of the high growth manufacturing countries in the world.

In the mid 1990’s he set up his own factory in the middle east eventually developing sales in SE Asia, South America, Africa and Europe.

After spending so much time on the production, technical and commercial aspects of industry with the focus on global market development, Nick has a good understanding of what businesses need to trade successfully overseas. 'One of the most fundamental requirements is knowing people you can trust and call on in each market’, which is why he knows the British Chambers of Commerce Global business Network is vital to international business success and global market development.
