Many Sheffield Chamber members already trade overseas, supply global value chains or are looking to expand into new markets. But the environment for doing business internationally is changing fast. Geopolitics is no longer background noise. It shapes costs, supply chains, market access, regulation, tariffs, sanctions and confidence. For firms importing, exporting or investing overseas, understanding political risk is now a core part of commercial decision-making.

That is exactly why the Diplomatic Advisory Hub exists.

What is the Diplomatic Advisory Hub?

The Diplomatic Advisory Hub is a joint initiative between the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the British Chambers of Commerce. Its purpose is simple: to give UK businesses, especially small and medium-sized firms, access to practical diplomatic and geopolitical insight that helps them trade, invest and grow overseas.

Think of it as a front door into government geopolitical expertise, combined with a feedback loop that ensures real business experience informs policymaking.

Staffed by FCDO diplomats and led by a former Ambassador, the Hub focuses on what companies consistently tell us they need: clear, usable insight on geopolitical risk, regulatory change and fast-moving conditions in overseas markets, including during periods of instability. In short, we translate complex global politics into commercial decisions you can act on.

The Hub will be shaped by the businesses that use it. Early engagement with firms and Chambers across the UK is already sharpening the offer, keeping it practical, responsive and business-led.

Why this matters for Sheffield and South Yorkshire

For Sheffield businesses, global events do not stay global for long. A political shock can affect the price and availability of inputs, shift demand in overseas markets, disrupt shipping routes, alter insurance costs or create new compliance requirements.

That matters for a city and region with deep strengths in manufacturing, engineering, materials, clean growth, health innovation, digital technology and professional services. What does support from the Hub look like?

The Diplomatic Advisory Hub supports businesses through:

• In-person outreach, meeting firms where they already are — including at Chamber events.
• Targeted webinars focused on priority regions, sectors and live issues, drawing on FCDO insight from around the world.
• One-to-one support, requested directly via the Hub’s website, for specific geopolitical or market-entry questions.
• Referrals to the right government or non-government support when issues sit outside the Hub’s core geopolitical remit.

The Hub can help companies think through questions such as: How might political instability affect a supply chain? What should we watch before entering a new market? How could sanctions, export controls or regulatory change affect our plans? Who in government is best placed to help when an issue is more specialised?

Crucially, what we hear from businesses flows back into government. That means real-world commercial experience helps shape how policy is developed and delivered.
