A-Plus Drum Line - Looking for new members
22nd April 2015
A new Sheffield percussion ensemble for people with disabilities is looking for new members to join the group.
Autism Plus and Concord Youth Music have joined forces to set up the group -A-Plus Drum Line. Adults and young people with autism and other learning difficulties are being taught to play a range of drums, including snare, bass and tenor drums. A-Plus Drum Line is a drum-line percussion ensemble based upon those seen in marching bands and drum corps. The leader of the group, Roger Steele, the founder and Director of Concord Youth Music, was inspired to set up the group having seen the New York Free Players - a similar group who have found fame in the USA. Autism Plus is delighted to work in partnership with Roger, as there is a real lack of opportunities for people with autism to take part in musical and visual performances. A-Plus Drumline enables individuals to develop musical skills, improve their confidence and build new relationships. Evidence has shown that drumming has some real, therapeutic health benefits, including reducing anxiety levels and helping to control chronic pain. Drumming also improves focus and provides multiple skills training, but most of all, it encourages self-expression and creativity. The group meets for training sessions at 5pm, every Tuesday, at the Exchange Brewery, Bridge Street, Sheffield. No experience is necessary and all training and equipment is be provided free of charge. If you are interested in joining, or want more information, please get in touch by emailing rcs@concord.org.uk or telephone 0114 384 0284.
