Act now on Windows upgrade to avoid unforeseen risk and costs, Chamber Members urged

21st April 2025

There may be 6 months until Windows 10 reaches it’s End of Life, but Sheffield-based Microsoft Partner One2Call is calling on Chamber members to act now to avoid hidden risks and costs.

With just six months remaining until Microsoft discontinues support, an estimated 150,000 Windows 10 devices are still in operation across the region, leading to a potential £80 million upgrade bill and heightened risks for businesses.

Acting now offers businesses a strategic advantage, allowing them to spread upgrade costs over time, avoid price hikes, and safeguard themselves against potential cyber threats. Businesses that wait until the last minute risk paying a premium for devices and services due to supply shortages and escalating demand.

Why Acting Now Matters
• Cost Efficiency: By planning early, businesses can avoid last-minute price spikes and secure Windows 11-compatible devices at more favourable rates.
• Enhanced Security: Once Windows 10 reaches End of Life on 14th October 2025, devices will no longer receive critical security updates, leaving them vulnerable to cyberattacks that could compromise operations and customer data.
• Operational Continuity: Address software compatibility issues ahead of time to ensure seamless transitions and avoid disruptions to your business activities.

Danny Kirkby, Chief Technology Officer at One2Call, emphasizes the urgency of early action: “Ignoring this deadline isn’t an option. As soon as Windows 10 support ceases, cybercriminals will exploit security vulnerabilities, putting businesses at serious risk. We urge our local business community to act now—spread the costs, reduce risks, and stay ahead of the curve.”

Avoid Unforeseen Costs
One2Call’s experience highlights the hidden costs of delaying upgrades. For example, a local business recently faced a £30,000 expense to replace production machinery because its control software wasn’t compatible with Windows 11. Early planning can prevent situations like this and ensure smoother transitions.
