Athena SWAN success continues for Sheffield Hallam
5th May 2016
Sheffield Hallam University has once again been recognised for its commitment to gender equality after winning one and retaining two Athena SWAN awards.
The University's nursing and midwifery department was given the bronze award for the first time, recognising the department's commitment to good practice in recruitment, retention and progression of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. The biosciences and chemistry department have once again retained its silver award status while the psychology department renewed its bronze award. Helen Best, deputy dean for Sheffield Hallam's Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, said: "This is a fantastic achievement for the three departments who are working hard to recruit and support women in a number of stimulating and important roles. "Nursing and midwifery have secured a bronze award in their first ever Athena SWAN application which is no mean feat and we are one of the first modern universities to renew a silver award in a biosciences and chemistry department so this is a fantastic achievement for all involved. "It is important to remember that improving retention and progression benefits all staff, not just women and we have worked hard to develop partnerships with other institutions to ensure we can continue to improve our promotion of gender equality."
