Blades unite to boost cancer charity
29th April 2014
Sheffield United players and fans came together to provide a £1,000 boost to charity Prostate Cancer UK.
The charity - which is the Football League's official charity partner - launched a new campaign this year called Men United v Prostate Cancer, which aims to raise awareness of the killer disease amongst the nation's men. To show their support for the campaign, Sheffield United created their own t-shirt design with the phrase 'Bladesmen United' on the front and included the charity's emblem, rather aptly, with a Blades scarf around the neck. The unique t-shirts were and continue to be sold in the clubs shop and online and were worn by Nigel Clough's team in the warm-up before their home victory over Stevenage last week. An urgent appeal to find Blades fans to assist with bucket collections on the night was successful, with Blades supporters helping to raise more than £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. Dave McCarthy, Operations Director at Sheffield United, said: -It's heart-warming to see fans and players come together to support such a great cause. We have some more exciting initiatives lined up to support Prostate Cancer UK, which will be announced soon''. -250,000 men in the UK are suffering from prostate cancer, that's enough to fill up Bramall Lane more than seven times. It's important that Football League clubs, players and fans continue to show their support for this wonderful campaign. Last season the charity raised more than £50,000 from collecting money across the UK at Football League grounds, and now they are looking to better that and raise more money to help fight the deadly disease.
