Brothers Unite at Yorkshire Half to Raise Funds for Cancer Hospital

29th January 2016

Two brothers, who want to show appreciation to their local cancer hospital, are stepping out at this year's Yorkshire Half Marathon to raise vital funds.

Scott (23) and Adam Chapman (17) from Thurnscoe in Rotherham have vowed to complete the 13 mile road race through Sheffield on Sunday 10th April to raise as much money as possible for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. After witnessing their granddad, uncle and many other family friends' battle cancer over the years, the pair are determined to raise funds for Weston Park Hospitals' dedicated charity so that those fighting cancer across the region can continue to benefit from the hospital's first- class care. The brothers' Granddad, Alan Chandler (75) was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October 2014 and received over 30 sessions of Radiotherapy at Weston Park Hospital. After responding well to treatment, Alan now visits the hospital every 6 months for regular check-ups. Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire a population of almost 1.8million people. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Scott, who works as a railway operative and his younger brother Scott, who is a student at Barnsley College, will be among thousands of people taking part in the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon-Sheffield, organised by Jane Tomlinson's Run For All. The race starts and finishes in Sheffield city centre and follows a scenic route offering outstanding views of the Peak District. The pair will join fellow runners taking on the challenge for the cancer charity as part of 'Team Weston Park' and be supported on the day from the side-lines by the charity's cheering squad. Scott said, -It is an immense pleasure and a privilege for me and my brother Adam to run the Sheffield half marathon for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. We both feel that we need to give something back for the great work those at the hospital do, because in our eyes they are are all incredible people and don't get the credit they seriously deserve (who said heroes wear capes!) -Choosing to run this iconic race for Weston Park Hospital was the easiest decision we've ever had to make, because the hospital has assisted in helping my Granddad, my uncle and a close family friend of ours overcome and beat cancer, and for that we are forever indebted. -I wish I could say that we would run millions of half marathons to say thank you but I don't think our bodies could take it, and it still wouldn't be enough. All we can say is thank you and hope the money we raise will help beat cancer sooner. Throughout 2016 the charity will fund various projects to enable the continued improvement of Weston Park Hospital; including the expansion of research studies, improving the way cancer treatments are delivered and supporting the ongoing care provisions of patients and their families affected by cancer. Last year, 7,500 people took to the streets of Sheffield for The Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon, many of those raising money for local charities and causes. This year, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is encouraging supporters looking to fulfil their fitness goals and take on an active challenge to do so whilst raising funds which will help transform the way cancer services are delivered in the region. Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross said, -We're very grateful to both Adam & Scott for joining Team Weston Park at Yorkshire's Plusnet Half Marathon in April. -The event is always a great day, for runners and spectators alike, and we hope to raise lots of money for life-changing projects within Weston park Hospital. -For those looking to improve their fitness levels in 2016, the Sheffield Half Marathon is a great event to set your sights on. Each year, a group of Team Weston Park runners take on this exciting race, knowing that each step they take helps to improve the lives of those fighting cancer.
