Businesses pledge support to Weston Park Cancer Charity for Master Cutler’s Challenge

2nd March 2020

Businesses from across the region attended the Master Cutler’s Challenge launch event last night to pledge their support for Weston Park Cancer Charity.

Master Cutler, Nick Williams opened the event at Sheffield Cutler’s Hall by shining a light on Weston Park Cancer Charity’s vital life-saving research and support services.

Master Cutler explained why he chose Weston Park Cancer Charity as the main beneficiary of funds raised through the 2020 Master Cutler’s Challenge.

He said: “I was about 14 when my aunt died of breast cancer, my mother died 10 years later from breast cancer and my sister four years after that. Sadly, a young nephew passed away a year last Christmas aged 30, so for me it was a no brainer.

“When you go into Weston Park Cancer Charity and when you meet the team, you see the passion. Those of you who yet haven’t signed up, trust me you will sign up when you hear the stories from patients, carers and staff.”

This was followed by breast cancer survivor, Fiona Tatton, who spoke about her experience at Weston Park.

She said: “The team at Weston Park Cancer Support Centre have been my constant companions – they stayed at my side when I was experiencing side effects from the medication, I had to take to stop the cancer returning.

“My main point of contact at the support centre, Vicky would speak to me everyday when I was going through the worst times. With her help and support, I’m getting my life back. There can be life after cancer.”

Sheffield Cancer Choir closed the event with a very fitting rendition of Cabaret – Money. Breast cancer survivor, Darrell Re set the cancer choir up with two of her friends as a way of giving back to the community and giving a voice to those affected by cancer.

At the inspiring event, participating businesses received a £50 cheque from Master Cutler, Nick Williams. They have six months to turn it into as much money as possible using nothing but entrepreneurial skills, team spirit and sheer grit and determination.

In what is a milestone year for Weston Park Cancer Centre as it marks its 50th year of treating patients, Weston Park Cancer Charity CEO, Samantha Dixon commented: “The launch event was a fantastic way to mark the start of the 2020 Master Cutler’s Challenge and we thank all businesses who have pledged their support to Weston Park Cancer Charity so far.

“We would like to emphasise that it is not too late to sign up for businesses across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire – but the earlier you sign up, the more time you have to raise as much as possible!”

The challenge closes in Autumn 2020, when a celebration will take place to recognise everyone’s fundraising efforts.
