Celebrity chef serves expertise to students

21st April 2021

President of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and TV personality Brian Turner CBE spoke virtually to Catering and Hospitality students at Barnsley College about the motivation, resilience and commitment needed to become a renowned chef.

Brian started the talk by sharing how his catering journey began as a trainee at Simpson’s in the Strand, The Savoy, The Beau Rivage in Lausanne and Claridge’s. He then opened the kitchens of The Capital Hotel with Richard Shepherd, where they won a then-rare Michelin star. Brian later opened his own restaurant Turner’s, with locations in Chelsea, Mayfair, Bognor Regis, Birmingham and Slough.

He also told students about his successful career as a TV personality. With regular appearances on Ready Steady Cook, This Morning, Saturday Kitchen, Saturday Morning with James Martin and his own shows A Taste of Britain and My Life on a Plate with the BBC.

Oliver Lee, a Level 2 Culinary Skills student, said: “The talk with Brian Turner was amazing, he told us all about the catering and hospitality industry. I learned that if someone says you can’t be a head chef or a Michelin star chef; and it’s your dream, go and prove them wrong.”

Martyn Hollingsworth, Catering and Hospitality Curriculum Leader at Barnsley College, added: “It was great to have Brian Turner talking to our students, inspiring their early journey into a career in the catering industry.

“The College is committed to transforming the lives of all its students and we aim to provide the highest quality provision possible, including industry talks like this one. This helps to raise our students’ aspirations and provide opportunities for them to achieve their full potential.”
