College tutor uses digital tools to enhance students’ learning

A Childcare T Level (Technical qualification) tutor at Barnsley College has embraced a new way of teaching as she utilises innovative digital platforms to further her students’ specialist knowledge.

Sarah Rawson, Course Leader for Childcare and Education Professions at Barnsley College, has embedded new technologies into the curriculum. This is to ensure that the blended learning that she delivers is fresh, keeps her students motivated and mimics the placement work that they would otherwise be completing as closely as possible. One of the technologies she is using to achieve this is Wakelet, an online platform on which students can save, share and organise content from across the web to support their studies.

Sarah said: “Digital technology is a key part of T Levels so I felt it was my role to introduce new technology to my students. Initially I was nervous about trying something new but through open and honest teamwork, we have been able to explore new ways of working which the students really enjoy.”

Holly Meynell, Childcare T Level student, added: “I think the lessons we are receiving to replace our placement opportunities are very useful and worthwhile and my new technology skills will be extremely beneficial when applying for jobs.

“I think Wakelet is a clear way to track my own personal progress as well as identify areas for improvement. Sarah has been very helpful; any concern I have, she finds a way to help me or gives me advice on how to do better. I feel I can say if anything is bothering me knowing that I'll be fully supported.”

In the future Sarah and her team hope to introduce Virtual Reality (VR) equipment for their students which will further support them in achieving their full potential.

Dale Karim, Teaching and Learning Coach at the College, also added: “It’s always great to see tutors using different technology to engage learners remotely. Sarah is doing an amazing job with her students and she is a credit to her department.”

Completing a T Level qualification with Barnsley College gives students the opportunity to take part in a placement which allows them to gain the professional experience and skills required for their specialist occupation. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic has enforced remote and blended learning across the nation, students have been unable to complete this component.
