Cut the Cr*p: What’s the Difference Between UX & UI Design?

26th November 2024

Welcome to “Cut the Cr*p”, my series designed to provide an explanation to some of the jargon, phrases, and concepts within the marketing and creative industries that can cause confusion or frustration, especially for those without a marketing background.

If you’ve ever dipped a toe into the world of digital design, you’ve probably heard the terms UX (User Experience), and UI (User Interface) thrown around. They’re often used together (and are intrinsically linked) but are not the same thing.

What is UX Design?

UX design focuses on a journey. It’s how someone feels when they interact with your digital presence or product, whether that’s a website, an app, or an online tool or software. A UX designer will map out the user journey, making sure it’s a seamless, logical, and enjoyable experience.

It’s like planning a road trip:
- You decide the best route, so users don’t get lost
- You schedule the stops, so the user finds everything they need to
- You add a scenic detour for those looking for more

UX is a research-heavy process. Designers need to understand what your users need, what frustrates them, and what makes them happy. Then they create wireframes, user flows, and prototypes to test and refine the experience.

Did you know? Beyond ensuring a seamless and enjoyable user journey, UX design significantly impacts on a website’s search performance. Search engines reward websites that offer a positive user experience, leading to high engagement metrics like longer session duration and lower bounce rate. UX’s focus on usability and user satisfaction plays a vital role in making the site more discoverable. This added benefit makes UX design a powerful tool not only for creating happy users but also for boosting a website’s visibility online.

What is UI Design?

UI design is what your users see. It’s the visual and interactive side of your digital product. UI design involves choosing colours, typography, buttons, icons, and layout to create an interface that’s intuitive and looks good.

Let’s go back to our road trip analogy:
- UI is the design of the car dashboard.
- It’s about making sure the buttons are easy to press, the display is clear, and controls feel natural. You are removing resistance from the UX journey.

UI brings the UX to life. It’s where form meets function to make sure everything not only works but looks good, too.

Why do UX and UI Need Each Other?

“Give me more cheesy analogies!” I hear you shout. While different, UX and UI are two sides of the same coin. If UX is the blueprint of a house, UI is the interior design.

Great UX without a good UI can feel bland or confusing. Whereas a great UI without effective UX might look great but leave users frustrated. It is the combination of both that creates a truly great digital product that people love to use.

Let’s chat!

I hope you have found this useful in understanding the relationship between UX and UI design, but I’d love to hear from you. Is this something you need to consider in your business or role?
