Disability works in Sheffield
13th October 2016
The Star is launching a campaign to help people with a disability into work - and we need your assistance! Across the city, people with disabilities would love to have a job and work hard, shoulder responsibility and meet any challenge laid before them.
At the same time, employers are crying out for motivated and reliable staff. Our campaign, in partnership with Sheffield City Council and the Department for Work and Pensions, aims to bring them together. In a series of articles, we will tell the stories of willing workers and bosses who see people for what they can do, and not what they can't - so get in touch if you can help! But there is plenty of help available - especially now. The DWP says there are more than 11m disabled people in the UK today, 19 per cent of the population and one in four households. Disability has changed. Perceptions and expectations are a world away from what they used to be. The Paralympics in Rio showed that disabled and able bodied athletes are matched for commitment, effort and will to win. In the ordinary world in which we live, society has never had a better understanding of mental and physical disabilities and a host of organisations stand ready to help. All of us have fantastic skills, some people just need a little more support. Now, we want to tell the story of disability in work in the modern world. Through our campaign we also aim to ease the anxiety of saying the wrong thing or being patronising or belittling to people with disabilities. Do you have a disability and work? Do you employ someone with a disability? We want to hear from you. We want to show that disability is no barrier to employment.
