Don Valley is still home for Sheffield Half Marathon

22nd November 2013

The city's biggest participation event, the Sheffield Half Marathon, will remain in the Don Valley in 2014.

The race will start and finish in the Don Valley Bowl, which is next door to Don Valley Stadium, the event's home for the past 21 years. The move to the open air grass bowl starts a new chapter in the history of Sheffield Half Marathon now in its 32nd year. Next year's race takes place on Sunday April 6, starting at 9am. Race organisers are delighted to confirm that for the seventh year running Sheffield company and global player SIG Insulation, who specialise in distribution of insulation and dry lining to the construction industry, will be the headline sponsor for the event. Margaret Lilley, chair of the Half Marathon organising committee, said: -We are incredibly excited about the 2014 event, which promises to be another spectacular day. As the Don Valley is synonymous with the event we wanted to stay in the area and the fact that we have found a new home so close to our old base is definite plus. We will retain the friendly -being at home feeling all the runners have come to love. -We had many happy years at Don Valley Stadium, but the grass bowl will generate an incredible atmosphere amongst both runners and spectators, as it creates a natural amphitheatre. The bowl has hosted some of the biggest music, sports and special occasions the city has seen including The Arctic Monkeys and the fireworks display After Dark. Councillor Isobel Bowler, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: -I'm really pleased this event has found a new home and that it will remain in the Don Valley area. This is a great example of organisations working together to develop solutions following the closure of Don Valley Stadium. I wish the organisers, and the event, the very best for 2014. As in previous years Sheffield International Venues has kindly agreed to help facilitate the event, including the use of nearby iceSheffield and the English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) premises on the day. Race organisers have made available 8,000 places for the re-launch of the SIG Insulation Sheffield Half Marathon, and urge runners to enter early and book their place for next year. As well as the half marathon there are 1,000 places available in the SIG Insulation Sheffield Fun Run which takes place on the same day (April 6) and is open to everyone. Entry fees for both races have been frozen at £26 for the half marathon (club/attached runners £24) and £5 for the fun run.
