Double award win for autism lecturer

Dr Luke Beardon from Sheffield Hallam University's Autism Centre has won two awards at the inaugural UK Autism Hero Awards.

Organised by the Anna Kennedy Online Charity, the Autism Hero Awards has been created to showcase the excellence taking place in the world of autism, whilst also celebrating the achievements and enhancing autism awareness and acceptance within society. Following a nomination process and judging panel, Dr Beardon won both the Professional and Lifetime Achievement awards on the night. Dr Beardon is a lecturer at The Autism Centre, part of the Sheffield Institute of Education, which is dedicated to developing and sharing knowledge about autism and enabling people on the autism spectrum, parents, families and professionals. Dr Beardon said: "When I found out I had been nominated in two categories I was absolutely delighted. Working at The Autism Centre, now for fifteen years, along with my career before that at The National Autistic Society, has been an ongoing learning curve that I hope lasts for many years to come. "It was a wonderful experience to be a part of the Autism Hero Awards event in London, and to see the extraordinary work being done across the country, and to see individuals and organisations being recognised for their efforts. "I hope that I can continue to contribute to the autism community, and my heartfelt thanks to Anna Kennedy and all those involved in nominating me, shortlisting me, and awarding me." Proceeds for the evening, which took place at the Amba Marble Arch in London, were donated to the Anna Kennedy Online charity to continue its work in raising autism awareness.
