Events increase for SIV

17th June 2013

Sheffield's ambitions to compete with other national events programmes was reinforced after Sheffield International Venues announced a 39 per cent increase in event numbers in 2012.

The city, via SIV, illustrated its skills in set up and managing multi-venue events, attracting the attention of national events buyers and providing a diverse range of facilities. Major events included NUS Conference 2013, SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers Association) Beer X conference and exhibition and the national Fitness Industry Association Awards. And following a successful 2012, SIV Events is ready to host and stage a diverse range of sport, business and entertainment events this year. Dominic Stokes, General Manager SIV Events, the function responsible for events, concerts and ticketing for Sheffield International Venues , said, -We have a really exciting few months ahead with around 20 conferences, banquets as well as the School Games ,the British Transplant Games as well as our entertainments programme. -What's great about these events is that they illustrate our success, skill set and ups in managing completely diverse multi-venue events. -Sheffield may be without a convention centre, but by combining our venues we have an imposing product. -We're competing with established cities like Manchester and London but we're still making an impression with national event buyers. Our approach saw business increase by 39% last year and I have ambitious plans for even more growth this year. This summer Sheffield City Hall will welcome the Arts Marketing Association Conference in July whilst August and September sees the return of two prestigious multi sport competitions to Sheffield; the British Transplant Games and the School Games. Approximately 550 arts professionals are expected to attend the Arts Marketing Association Conference which will run from July 16-18, with Sheffield City Hall as the main conference venue. There will also be a series of networking and social events across the city. The British Transplant Games, which celebrates the sporting achievements of athletes who have undergone an organ transplant, will bring 600 competitors and over 1,000 spectators over four days from August 14-18 and the Sainsbury's 2013 School Games, following their 2012 event in the Olympic Park, will be back in Sheffield from September 12-15 bringing 1,500 young competitors. Both sporting competitions will use the majority of SIV's venues including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Don Valley Stadium, EIS Sheffield, and iceSheffield. Sheffield City Hall will also be used for training and fringe meetings and the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield will host opening and closing ceremonies for the School Games. SIV Events will also stage concerts by Jools Holland, The Darkness, Amy Macdonald, Celebrities on Ice at the Scarborough Spa, a North Yorkshire coast venue that joined the SIV portfolio last year..
