Families wanted to support the chase in Grenoside

8th July 2013

A family fun run in Grenoside is looking for children and families from across the Grenoside area to help support the annual Grenochase.

The annual Grenochase starts in Grenoside Park, near the Appletree Nursery at 5pm on Friday, 26 July. The race began in 1951 by local resident Walter Platts who wanted to organize an event which brought the entire community in Grenoside together. 50 years on and the event continues to bring the community together. This year's event is sponsored by Singh's Premier Stores. Grenochase spokesperson Peter Hughes said, -The Grenochase aims to involve all the family in a fun way. There are two races one aimed at children, which is a lot of fun, before the adult race which seems like a sprint over 3.5 miles in-order to win the Grenoside Steeplechase Cup. All proceeds from the event will go to Macmillan Cancer Support and this year over 100 adults and 100 children have entered to take part. Peter continues, -We hope the community will continue to support the event and raise much needed funds for Macmillan, who offer such wonderful support to the people of Sheffield when they need it. The children's races are split into four categories age 4, 5-7 year-olds, 8 to 10-year-olds and 11-13-year olds. The children's races start from 5pm, before the adult race which starts at 7pm. Rob Turner, fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Sheffield said, -Macmillan relies on the support of local community events such as this to provide vital cancer support services - for every five adults taking part it means that we can fund a Macmillan Nurse for an hour, so the more people who support this event the more we can do to support the people of Sheffield.. To help support this year's GrenoChase and raise as much money as possible for this very worthy cause please come along on the evening and join in with the event. There will be live music provided by a DJ whilst you cheer on the runners. If you would like any further information please contact: staceyjohnson1212@btinternet.com
