Farewell to Chris French: A Legacy of Dedication and Excellence in Education
15th July 2024
As we approach the end of this academic year, Mercia Learning Trust bids a fond farewell to our CEO, Chris French, who will be retiring this summer.
Chris has been an inspirational leader and dedicated educator, leaving a lasting impact on our trust and the broader educational community.
With a career spanning 36 years in Sheffield, Rotherham, and Wakefield, Chris's journey in education is a testament to his passion, commitment, and visionary leadership. He began his career in Nottingham, inspired by his teachers, and studied geography at the University of Sheffield. After completing his PGCE, Chris rose through the ranks from a geography teacher to headteacher, CEO of Brigantia Learning Trust, and ultimately CEO of Mercia Learning Trust.
Chris has been instrumental at Mercia Learning Trust in Sheffield in fostering a culture of excellence, inclusion, and collaboration. His strategic vision has guided us through significant developments, including successful partnerships and major capital projects.
His leadership has been particularly impactful in schools facing significant challenges, driving positive change and achieving outstanding results.
In addition to his educational achievements, Chris has served a term on the council of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, exemplifying his dedication to fostering strong ties between education and business in the region.
Phil Smith, Chair of our Trust, said:
"Chris is driven by what is best for the children we serve. Beneath his polite exterior runs a rod of iron, uncompromising in his determination that all children deserve the very best chance in life. His term as CEO will be remembered as pivotal in preparing us for the next phase of our journey. Chris will be missed and leaves an exceptional legacy."
At a recent Mercia Learning Trust conference, Chris reflected on his career, emphasising the profound impact of education on social mobility and the importance of building strong partnerships and inclusive environments.
As Chris retires, we welcome Neil Miley as the new CEO. Neil, who joins us from Dixons Academies Trust, has already begun a comprehensive transition process, working closely with Chris to ensure continuity. Neil commented:
"It has been a pleasure to shadow Chris. His respect from everyone in our trust and external stakeholders is a testament to his servant leadership and continuous drive for improvement."
Chris's significant contribution to education was recently recognised by the Department for Education with an invitation to the Buckingham Palace Garden Party in May.
