Feeling the heat? The workplace hazard people don’t plan for

25th June 2026

The UK is in the grip of another heatwave and employers face an important challenge: ensuring workers remain safe, comfortable and protected in rising temperatures.

Trip hazards, chemical hazards, respiratory hazards... all of these are planned for.

However, as the temperatures continue to rise year on year and heatwaves become more extreme, we're helping businesses tackle summer safety.

In the UK, heatwaves affect approximately 33 of workers and lead to millions of working hours being lost.

Whilst there may not yet be a maximum legal working temperate in the UK, heat is categorised legally as a workplace hazard, meaning employers must take practical measures to protect all workers.

The question isn't whether summer temperatures will affect your workforce.

The question is whether you're prepared for it.

Heat stress can lead to:

  • Dehydration
  • Exhaustion
  • Skin issues and sunburn
  • Reduced alertness
  • Fatigue
  • Poor decision-making
  • Increased accident risk

A summer safety plan should go beyond providing drinking water or ice cold treats.

Consider lightweight workwear, breathable PPE, cooling garments and UV protection creams to help keep workers safe and comfortable throughout the day.
