Former showroom, The Showroom, becomes showroom

23rd May 2017

Originally a 'Kennings' car showroom in the 1930s, Sheffield's Showroom Cinema and Workstation will be home to a McLaren supercar for one evening only on Wednesday 24 May.

The independent cinema and creative workspace have teamed up with Sheffield's AMRC for a special event to celebrate the release of McLaren A new documentary which tells the amazing story of Bruce McLaren, a young boy from humble beginnings who dared to take on the elite world of motor racing, and against all odds led his team and the McLaren name to greatness. Coming hot on the heels of the announcement that McLaren Automotive are opening a purpose-built production facility in Sheffield, creating 200 new jobs. Guests from Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing sector will have the opportunity to see close-up one of the new McLaren 720s supercars at a private reception. They can then discover the inspiration behind the iconic motor racing brand at the Northern Premier of McLaren. -After the decline of the heavy industries in Sheffield in the 1980s, the city reinvented itself as a centre for filmmaking and Advanced Manufacturing. The McLaren Northern premiere is a great opportunity for these two sectors to come together and celebrate both the history and the future of McLaren, of which Sheffield will play an important part. We are incredibly excited to have a new McLaren supercar on display in our foyer for the event. As many people in Sheffield know, our building was originally a car showroom from the 1930s until the 1970s, so it is a great way to acknowledge it's history and heritage. - Méabh O'Donovan Head of Development, Showroom Workstation The event takes place on Wednesday 24 May from 17:30 at Showroom Workstation and is by invitation only, with a limited number of press places available. #McLarenFilm
