Graduates Secure Long Term Employment following Successful Internship Programme

31st July 2014

The University of Sheffield Careers Service are proud to announce that 21 graduates have recently secured a 3 month internship through the Santander Internships.

The scheme offered recent graduates the opportunity to work for a variety of small to medium sized enterprises (SME's) in the South Yorkshire area. The internships were part funded by Santander with a £1,500 subsidy. The internships were varied and included roles such as Marketing and Communication Officer, Alumni Assistant, PR Executive, Advocacy Worker, Translation Coordinator, Field Archaeologist and Recruitment Consultant. Many of the graduates are currently part way through their internship. A small number have almost completed them and we are pleased that many of these graduates have been offered longer term contracts with their organisations. Graduate Richard Lewis worked at Zoo Digital Group PLC, a leading provider of cloud based media production software and services. Richard undertook the role of Translation Coordinator under the supervision of manager Karla Harrison and has since secured a permanent contract. Richard said: -My manager has been very supportive from day one and she's made it clear that she's very happy with the job I'm doing. I've already moved onto a permanent contract which I'm going to begin as soon as my internship ends. If the scheme with other employers is anything like as good as it has been for me here at Zoo Digital I would certainly recommend it. It's been a great experience for the past three months and it's certainly helped me get to where I want to be in my career. Graduate Faye Smith worked as an Administration Assistant at the Sheffield Law Society.  Faye commented about the scheme: -The internship has helped me to improve the skills I already had, but I've also learnt new things too. For example I've been trained to use Sage financial software and how to do the accounts for the business. So I think it's definitely improved my prospects for applying for other jobs in the future. Faye has also been offered a longer term contract. Along with Sam Cook who worked as a Marketing and Development Assistant at the Cathedral Archer Project. Alastair Morris Business Development Manager at Pryor Marking Technologies explains what attracted him to the scheme; -We were looking to revitalise our marketing activities. It was something that had fallen by the wayside over the last four years and there was nobody working on marketing there were skills that we'd lost from the organisation completely. Getting an intern in to help us with those activities was a real advantage because it brought in skills that the organisation didn't have, but it also allowed us to dip our toe in the water a little bit and work out exactly what we want. The Santander Internships are a wonderful way for small businesses to fill an existing vacancy, assist where there are staff shortages or to head up a new project. Many employers have used the Santander Internships to seek out new employees and see how they fit into the organisation before offering them a longer term contract.
