Hallam lecturer shortlisted for prestigious writing award

13th November 2017

A creative writing lecturer from Sheffield Hallam University has been named on the shortlist for the prestigious Sunday Times 'Young Writer of the Year Award'.

Julianne Pachico made her debut this year with her book, 'The Lucky Ones'. Set in Colombia between 1993 and 2013 — the peak years of violence during the long Colombian conflict —the novel centres on a group of wealthy girls, the daughters of expats and local elite, and the teachers, housekeepers, warlords, and guerrilla fighters who surround them. Julianne's shortlisting, for The Sunday Times / Peters Fraser + Dunlop Young Writer of the Year Award, rewards the best work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry by a British or Irish author aged between 18 and 35. Julianne is a creative writing lecturer at Sheffield Hallam and is currently completing her PhD in creative and critical writing. The talented writer has previously had a short story on the long list for the Sunday Times Prize, and her short stories have been published by The New Yorker, Lighthouse, Litro, Shooter Literary Magazine and Newwriting.net, among others. Julianne said: "I'm very thankful and excited to be included on a shortlist with so many talented writers. It's always helpful as a debut author to receive support. I'm especially excited about meeting the other authors and reading their work!" The winner will be announced at a reception at the London Library on Thursday 7 December.
