Hallamshire Golf Club swings into action for Weston Park Cancer Charity

22nd March 2019

Golfers raise over £3,600 through partnership with Weston Park Cancer Charity to support cancer patients across the region.

Weston Park Cancer Charity was chosen by Hallamshire Golf Club captains, Martin Loxley and Tracy Tunbridge who presented the cheque to Weston Park Cancer Charity on Monday 11th March. Speaking of their decision to support the region's only specialist cancer hospital, Tracy commented; -Sadly my mum lost her cancer fight in her fifties and there was very little medical help she could be given at the time of her diagnosis. Much of my life has mirrored my mums so it was particularly poignant for me to choose Weston Park Cancer Charity as part of my 60th birthday celebrations." Martin commented: -We consider ourselves lucky to be able to play golf, on such a fabulous course, and are fully aware that some people aren't as lucky and are facing their own personal battles with this terrible disease. What the charity does to support people is incredible and we all wanted to do our bit to help. And speaking on behalf of their member's Tracy added: -Weston Park was particularly close to member's hearts as the previous year's captain Mr Mike Patterson sadly died of cancer during his term in office in 2017 so it was important that we did something in his memory. Alongside this, a number of our ladies have also survived cancer so supporting a local cancer charity is particularly important as a celebration of life and to remember those who are sadly no longer here. The partnership which ran throughout 2018 saw the charismatic duo inspire members to part with their cash through their Captain's Days, charity golf days and Captains' Bunker Sponsorship. Weston Park Cancer Charity fundraiser, Charlotte Swinhoe who received the cheque commented: -We are tremendously grateful to Martin and Tracy and the members of Hallamshire Golf Club for working so hard over the last 12 months to raise such as fantastic total. Every pound will make a real difference to the lives of people living with and beyond cancer in our region. Martin added: -We are grateful to everyone at Hallamshire Golf Club and all the members who have supported what we wanted to do. We've worked well as a partnership and hopefully found a balance between letting golfers enjoy Hallamshire and asking them to donate towards the charity. At its core, Weston Park Cancer Charity exists to create a better life for those living with and beyond cancer. Through charitable support it is committed to fund things the NHS alone cannot provide and raises over £2million every year to fund; practical help to those in need, emotional support to those in despair and enhanced care for those who need it most.
