Industrialist gains top accolade

The chief executive at one of the UK's most renowned engineering companies has been awarded a top industry honour, backed by Royal Charter.

Dr Graham Honeyman CBE, chief executive of Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd, has been recognised by the Council of City and Guilds of London Institute, which has given him its highest possible award, a Fellowship. The Fellowship acknowledges Dr Honeyman's standing within industry and his years of work to train staff and support apprenticeships and particularly notes his commitment to young people in the workplace. Sir John Armitt, Chairman of The City and Guilds of London Institute, said: -It is with great pleasure that I can confirm our highest award of Fellowship to Dr Honeyman. -The Fellowship recognises Dr Honeyman's professional and personal achievements and in particular, his significant contribution to the field of vocational education and training and his unswerving commitment to young people. The City and Guilds Group was founded in 1878 and has become synonymous with training and education within industry and trades. Fellowship of The City and Guilds of London Institute (FCGI) is an honour bestowed by Council upon exceptional individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their field, gained the respect of their peers and can be considered role models for their profession. Dr Honeyman, said: -This is one of the greatest honours bestowed to industrialists and I am overwhelmed to have been chosen for this accolade by the City and Guilds Council. -We at Sheffield Forgemasters have always recognised the value of young people to this business and to the UK's manufacturing base in general and it is testament to the determination and dedication of our trainees and staff across the company that I accept this award. Dr Honeyman was also awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honour's list in 2008 for his work in preserving and developing heavy steelmaking and engineering industry in Sheffield. He will be able to use the post-nominal letters FCGI to indicate his connection to the City and Guilds and will be presented with a Fellowship Diploma at a forthcoming ceremony and will also be entitled to wear designated robes at appropriate ceremonies. Fellowship of the City and Guilds provides an invaluable source of advice and support to City and Guilds regionally, nationally and internationally and Fellows' eminence and expertise helps to raise the group's profile and standards of practical craft, technical and business skills.
