Inspirational Golfer Wins Charity Tournament which Helped Save His Life

A local businessman who was saved from a life-threatening brain tumour diagnosis, had an extra boost as he captained the winning team in this year's Neurocare part of Sheffield Hospitals Charity annual golf day, sponsored by IFM Insurance, which helped to save his life. The event held at Hallamshire Golf Club raised over £21,000 for the charity and saw Alistair Farrant, Managing Director of Skratch Design life the trophy with his team.

Alistair has taken part in the event for several years, however, this year his win was extra special. He received a sudden life-threatening brain tumour diagnosis two years ago. This came as a complete shock to him and his family following a routine visit to the GP after experiencing regular dizzy spells. He was referred for an MRI scan and the same afternoon was rushed to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital for urgent surgery and placed in the High Dependency Unit.

He was told the devastating news that he needed surgery to remove the tumour immediately. He underwent 12-hour brain surgery, which was successful and following extensive rehabilitation he has returned to the golfing fairways.

Alistair praises everyone who helped him,

"I am eternally grateful to the whole team who treated and cared for me at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, their skills are world-class. I have always entered a team in the Neurocare Golf Day but to finally win it this year after everything I've been through was an incredible feeling.

I am hoping that hearing things like this from people who have been through it will give others having treatment for brain tumours some confidence. It is tough to deal with obviously, but can often work out fine with the support of the incredible team of specialists here in Sheffield."

The annual tournament could only take place with the amazing support of IFM Insurance, who have been the principal sponsors of the event for many years.

Mark Barlow from IFM Insurance said,

"We are delighted to continue our support for this event and what an inspirational way to celebrate the work of the charity and the event, then for Alistair to life the trophy."
