Inspirational Sheffield College staff celebrated at first online awards ceremony

13th July 2020

Inspirational Sheffield College staff have been commended in an annual virtual awards ceremony.

Inspirational Sheffield College staff have been celebrated at a virtual awards ceremony held today – July 10th 2020.

The annual Staff Excellence Awards 2020 event has taken place online for the first time due to current coronavirus safety measures.

The awards recognise members of staff across the organisation, who have had an exceptional impact on students, colleagues or the wider community this year.

Angela Foulkes, Chief Executive and Principal, The Sheffield College, said:

“I am very proud of our brilliant award winners, who have had such a positive impact on our students or colleagues.”

She added: “In addition to our annual awards, we have also recognised some of the College’s unsung heroes this year who have been commended by their peers as going the extra mile during lockdown. I’d also like to pay tribute to all of our fantastic staff who have pulled together to support our students during an unprecedented academic year.”

Nominations were received for nine main awards categories. This year’s winners are:

  • Chair of Governors’ Choice Award – The Sheffield College Nursery Team
  • Inspiration Award – Joanne Biddle, Training Assessment Facilitator, Floristry
  • Go Further Award – Kelly Stone, Lecturer, Animal Care
  • Student First Award ¬– Rachael Price, Tutor Mentor, Health and Social Care
  • Support Team of the Year – The Route to Employment Team
  • Support Staff of the Year – Josh Houghton, Business Development Support Officer
  • Teaching Team of the Year – The Access to Nursing Teaching Team
  • Teacher of the Year – Sam Cooper, Lecturer, Journalism
  • Students’ Choice Award – Tierney Kitteridge, Lecturer, Animal Care

In their nomination submissions, students praised teaching staff for being inspirational and supportive, and going the extra mile to help them to achieve and excel during lockdown.

Joanne Hardy, Senior Manager, The Sheffield College Nursery Service, whose team won the Chair of Governors’ Choice Award, said:

“Our nursery stayed open during lockdown with our team providing care to vulnerable as well as key worker children from across the city, whose parents were working on the frontline. It’s brilliant that our contribution has been recognised in this way.”

Seb Schmoller, Chair of The Sheffield College Governing Body, added:

“Our staff and students have been stretched since Covid-19 hit. I want to express my sincere admiration for the way that staff have risen to that challenge and recognise their efforts as they progress the College's re-opening plans for the new academic year.”

He added: “These awards reveal the great impact of our staff, and the good that they do for our students and the City of Sheffield. On behalf of all of our Governors, I would like to thank all our staff for the part they are playing; and I congratulate everyone shortlisted for, or winning, one of these awards."
