Inspiring Women - Women of Steel Dinner
12th February 2014
Question: What do you get if you put a Spitfire, tank and battleship parts maker in a room with an overhead cranedriver and a steel rolling mill worker? Answer: Four of the most inspiring Sheffield women you'll ever meet.
Sheffield Chamber and Sheffield City College are delighted to be supporting the ultimate in Inspiring Women the Women Of Steel. Whilst the men of Sheffield fought for their country during World Wars I and II, thousands of women were conscripted into the steel factories of Sheffield to work under the threat of air raids to ensure the factories continued to operate to keep up with demand. The women left behind their normal family lives in order to keep the noisy, laborious and often dangerous factories running. At the end of the war, these highly skilled heroines were simply dismissed and had to return to their old lives as the men returned. Unrecognised for years, Sheffield has decided to make a stand and commemorate their fantastic achievements by commissioning a statue to stand proudly in the city centre. Inspiring Women have been supporting this fundraising effort, and have joined with Sparks Restaurant at Sheffield City College to produce this mouth watering fundraising event.
