Irwin Mitchell Lawyers put Best Foot Forward to Retain Half Marathon Corporate Team Challenge Title

20th June 2012

A team of employees from leading law firm Irwin Mitchell came out on top after taking to the streets and pounding the pavements as part of the 2012 SIG Sheffield Half Marathon's Corporate Team Challenge for the fourth year in a row.

The team of three completed the gruelling 13.1 mile route which started and finished at Don Valley Stadium and took runners through the streets of the city past Bramall Lane, Ecclesall Road and the Town Hall with a combined time of a very impressive 4 hours, 34 minutes and 32 seconds. Tom Paton, solicitor at Irwin Mitchell  who ran for the winning team (which also included Rob Lankester and Chris Newell), said: Having won the title for the past three years the team was under pressure to perform and retain the trophy for a fourth year running. It certainly wasn't easy with an unusually hot Sunday morning in May. Coming out on top again is a fantastic achievement. It is testament to all the hard work and training the team put in leading up to the half marathon, and makes the few injuries we picked up along the way worth it. But it's not just about the winning, taking part in the corporate challenge is an unmissable opportunity to be part of a group of people striving to push themselves to achieve their best. In addition to taking first place, another team from Irwin Mitchell walked away with second place in the Corporate Team Challenge. Tracey Mardell, of the Irwin Mitchell second team, commented: The team are unbelievably proud of taking home second place and of our colleagues who managed to defend our first place title. We were pleasantly surprised to have finished second overall, especially given the heat and felt a fantastic sense of achievement for just crossing the finish line. I think everyone at Irwin Mitchell who took part in the challenge this year would definitely encourage other local businesses to put forward teams and take part in such an enjoyable and atmospheric event in the future. It is a great accomplishment to have taken part in one of Sheffield's largest road races and to have been able to promote Irwin Mitchell as a supportive employer and great place to work. The SIG Sheffield Half Marathon Corporate Team Challenge encourages local businesses to enter teams of four to complete the half marathon distance and then takes the accumulated time of the three fastest runners to generate a team score. Each team is then ranked on a league table. The firm also had a number of additional half marathon runners taking part on the day who ran to raise funds for one of the official charities for the 2012 half marathon, St Luke's Hospice, who have been selected by Irwin Mitchell as their Sheffield office Charity of the Year.
