Launch of New Fast Electric Vehicle Charging Points in Sheffield
4th February 2015
Cllr Jayne Dunn launched two new fast charging points for electric vehicles in Sheffield on Monday (26 January).
The charging points will allow an electric vehicle to be fully charged in just three to four hours and are free to use at Parkers Lane in Broomhill and Carver Lane in the City Centre. Speaking as she unveiled the charging point at Parkers Lane Councillor Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Streetscene at Sheffield City Council, said: -We recognise the need to have cleaner vehicles on our streets to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions, and I am pleased to announce more charging points for drivers of electric cars and vans in Sheffield. -This follows our announcement in November of a rapid charger at Meadowhall and two further fast chargers. Using government funding, which we successfully bid for, we are now establishing a network of these chargers across the city and indeed across South Yorkshire. -The charger in our car park at Parkers Lane in Broomhill is, great for visitors to the city's hospitals and universities, and the one at Carver Lane is centrally located for visitors to the city centre. -I hope that this increase in the provision of charges will encourage more people to consider going green and using electric vehicles. Mark Daly, Sustainable Development Officer at Sheffield City Council, said: -These new electric vehicle charging sites in Sheffield have been installed by the EVInmotion! Project, funded through the Department for Transport's Local Sustainable Transport Fund. -This project is helping to not only establish publicly-accessible electric vehicle charging in our region, but also to help businesses in South Yorkshire to lease an electric car or van through a £2,500 subsidy and provide money off installing a charge point at their premises. -We are installing fast charging sites in Sheffield, Meadowhall, Rotherham town centre, Barnsley and Doncaster. -We'll also be installing at least three more rapid chargers across the region, which can charge a car in as little as 20 minutes. -Working on this project has led me to see the benefits of electric cars for the environment and my wallet. -I bought my own electric car almost a year ago and have just completed 10,000 miles in it, so - along with the growing numbers of electric vehicle drivers - I welcome these new charging points. Inmotion! and npower who, together, are funding and administering the project and Venson Automotive Solutions is the chosen vehicle supplier,. The Inmotion! Electric Vehicles scheme was established following a successful bid for £24.6 million from the Department for Transport's 'Local Sustainable Transport Fund'.
