Local Company SmartSeal (DRFP) Takes Top Honour with ProPoint at the Medtech EMDT 2012 Awards

10th April 2012

DRFP Ltd (SmartSeal), the Sheffield-based specialist dental technology company is delighted to announce that it has won the Dental Instrument or Equipment category at the Medtech EMDT Innovation Awards for its innovative ProPoint obturation product.

SmartSeal make a revolutionary dental root filling product (ProPoint). Dentists have traditionally used a rubber-based point to fill the roots of teeth after the nerve has been removed during a procedure commonly known as root canal treatment. The Medtech EMDT competition, an international awards programme for the medical technology community acrossEurope, recognised the innovation, ease-of-use and end-user benefits ProPoint provides. ProPoint, combined with SmartPaste, forms a unique two-part filling system known as SmartSeal, which is used by dentists for easier more predictable body friendly root canal treatments. The advanced polymer technology that DRFP employs in its system means that dentists no longer have to rely on Gutta Percha, a product historically used to make golf balls and sub-sea telegraph cables, to fill root canal cavities. Commenting on the win, Dr Jerry Watson, Founder and Clinical Director, DRFP Ltd said: -The Medtech competition pitched ProPoint against some of the most innovative, ground-breaking dental technology from aroundEuropeand we are delighted that it has been acknowledged with this honour. This award recognises that ProPoint has significant benefits, not only for the patient because of its effectiveness in root canal therapy, but also for the dental surgeon because of its ease of application using existing techniques, equipment and protocols. On the night, the judges commented on the win: 'A really strong category... but the judges singled out one entry for the outstanding work in development and use of materials, and the fact that it is an innovative new product.' The SmartSeal factory is based near Handsworth,Sheffield. All the R&D and manufacture for worldwide distribution is produced here by a dedicated team of seven. With the Sales and Marketing office based in Barnack nearStamford, making it an all-British product to be proud of.
