Local Logistics Firm give Unique Insight to University Students

18th December 2015

A group of international students from the University of Sheffield's Management School were given a unique insight into the logistics industry by a local haulage firm.

More than 30 Operations and Supply Chain Management students were given a tour of DBL Logistics' depot on Tinsley Park Road as part of the firm's continued partnership with the University of Sheffield. Students from China, Mexico, Taiwan and Pakistan were given a first-hand insight into various aspects of the industry, including warehouse operations, management and computer systems, routing and tracking. Dr Niraj Kumar, Lecturer in Operations and Supply Chain Management at the University of Sheffield Management School, said: -We're delighted to be working with DBL Logistics. -Our partnership has allowed us to offer our students the opportunity to learn about warehousing and pallet logistics operations in a state-of-the-art depot. -The students were able to obtain invaluable, real life experiences of the industry and we wouldn't be able to do this without the co-operation of local firms such as DBL Logistics. DBL Logistics Managing Director, David Clarkson, a partner of the University's Advanced Resource Efficiency Centre, said: -We have been working closely with the University over the last few months on the development of an innovative supply chain analysis tool, and we are delighted to continue this partnership by welcoming their students to our depot. -It was a pleasure to pass on our expertise to the next generation of logistics professionals and I look forward to continuing our work with the University in the future. DBL Logistics currently warehouses and distributes more than 120,000 pallets of goods across South Yorkshire and the North Midlands each year, and is a founding member depot of the UPN (United Pallet Network), which has more than 85 depots throughout the UK and collects and delivers freight from across 26 countries in Europe.
