Mayor announces plan to stop poor health holding South Yorkshire back
21st March 2023
As new analysis shows poor health costs South Yorkshire 14.6m working days a year, South Yorkshire’s Mayor announces plan to tackle poor health outcomes in the region.
Mayor Oliver Coppard is visiting Armthorpe’s Family Hub in Doncaster to mark the launch of South Yorkshire’s Health Strategy.
The Mayor, who is also the Chair of the Integrated Care Partnership, has convened partners from across the region to create the strategy which will tackle health inequalities, access to health and wellbeing care, close the healthy life expectancy gap, and improve the quality of life for people in South Yorkshire’s communities.
There is a particular focus on early years development and giving children the best start in life. Research shows that if a child does not reach key developmental milestones within their first 1001 days, or if they are not ‘school ready’, they are likely to fall into ill health earlier and become unable to reach their full potential.
Figures show that South Yorkshire loses 2.5m more working days a year due to long term sickness compared to the average for England.
