Member Profile - Cavendish Cancer Care

5th May 2021

Since 1991, Cavendish Cancer Care have been there for people across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. From their centre at 34 Wilkinson Street, they offer free of charge support to people who need them.

Cavendish Cancer Care are a local charity based in Sheffield, who support people with the effects that cancer has on their mental health and emotional wellbeing. A cancer diagnosis has a huge impact on patients and their families. They see patients, but also anyone else affected by cancer, this could be a carer, family member, friend and loved one. They also have a dedicated Young People’s Service who support children and young people through counselling, art therapy and play therapy.

They work alongside the NHS, offering professional counselling and therapy that complements and supports medical treatment. Their team of skilled counsellors and therapists specialise in supporting those with cancer. The services they offer are 100% free of charge and are tailored to each individual’s needs.

“The mental health side of cancer is overlooked. I experienced through what happened to me that the surgeons, urologists and nurses have a job to do and that’s to make me better. The emotional and mental side of it isn’t necessarily their job description. That’s where Cavendish really comes into its element, they’re equally as important as treatment. They go hand in hand.”

To speak to someone about how they can help, please fill in their Self-Referral Form on their website.

Cavendish Cancer Care also offer a well-established peer to peer support service, called Cavendish Buddies. The volunteer service is there to have someone to talk to, and for them to listen to your concerns and worries. They are the friend on the other end of the phone to help support you. To find out more about having a buddy or being a buddy, please see their website.

All of our core service is delivered free of charge, but Cavendish Cancer Care couldn’t offer this without the generosity of their friends and supporters. They receive just 4% of statutory funding each year, which keeps their doors open for roughly two weeks. You can help Cavendish make sure that no one faces cancer alone by helping support them, whether that is through fundraising, partnering with them or volunteering.
