Member Profile – NHD Tax Solutions

NHD Tax Solutions is a tax consultancy with a difference – it doesn’t complete Tax Returns and it doesn’t undertake tax planning!

What the business does do is provide expert assistance with any type of investigation, enquiry or dispute with HMRC. Managing Director Nick Davies, who established the business in Sheffield in June 2021, says:

“After 40 plus years in tax, both with HMRC and within the accountancy profession, it is clear
to me that expert and specialist advice and guidance is more necessary than ever for any individual or business receiving the unwelcome attentions of HMRC. Their investigators are poised to become particularly active as the government seeks to fill the gaping hole in the nation’s finances left by the pandemic. Therefore we saw this as the perfect time to set the business up, and Sheffield as the perfect location with its ease of access to the rest of the UK”

Although based in Sheffield, the business provides its expertise across the UK and covers all types and sizes of HMRC dispute, all the way up to representation in the Tax Tribunal. Nick explains:

“As the number of tax investigations continues to increase year on year and as HMRC are adding to their investigative workforce more businesses and individuals will find themselves under scrutiny. However we have found that HMRC staff are often poorly trained and frequently attempt to exceed the legal powers that they have. They routinely ask for things that they are not entitled to, and they conveniently forget that the taxpayer has rights too. Therefore, in our view, anybody facing any form of contact from HMRC should seek professional advice as early as possible. Often it only takes one letter or phone call to close HMRC down before the matter gets out of hand. Our job is to “manage” HMRC and hold them to account, and this ensures the best possible outcome for our clients”

Much of the work of the business is by way of referrals from accountancy or legal practices that don’t carry the necessary expertise in-house. But in recent years letters have been received by an increasing number of people who are not professionally represented, particularly if they have income or assets overseas or have perhaps sold a property.
