New Specialist Employment Service Offers a Step in the Right Direction

12th September 2013

Jobsteps, a local employment provider and a subsidiary of disability charity Autism Plus has recently re-launched its specialist employment programme, Stepping Forward, to support adults with autism and learning disabilities across South Yorkshire.

The programme now offers a menu of support services that people can choose from to help them find their best route into employment. Each person has the option to attend group or one-to-one sessions on preparing for employment, getting employment experience or going into employment. Individuals can receive support with developing their employability skills and confidence. There are also opportunities to go on work placements for those that want to increase their work experience as well as support with preparing for interviews and identifying suitable job opportunities. The programme also supports those already in employment by providing a tailored in-work support service. Individuals can choose to have their own dedicated employment coach or support worker that can offer employment and disability guidance and advice to both them and their employer. The Stepping Forward programme has been redeveloped to compliment the government's new personalisation agenda 'Right to Control' that allows individuals eligible for specialist employment support the right  to control their own budget and choose which services they want to purchase and  where from. Peta Troke, Stepping Forward Employer Adviser said: -Since we first launched Stepping Forward we've had some tremendous success, in total 20% of everyone we have supported have not only improved their confidence and skills but have managed to find paid employment. -The programme is great for really preparing people for the world of work; and now with the option to choose as well as mix and match services it means individuals can feel more confident and are equipped with the exact skills they need for their next stage of their journey and as they move closer into employment.
