Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry are sad to inform members of the death of their Past President, Nick Tovey on the 2nd February following a tragic fall from which he sustained head injuries from which he was unable to recover. Nick was only sixty-eight.

Nick was born in Sheffield, qualified as a Mining Engineer, and spent over 40 years with Wardell Armstrong, an international multidisciplinary Environmental, Engineering and Mining consultancy.

When Regional Director of Wardell Armstrong, Nick was elected President in 2009-2010, a voluntary role but an honour which came about following years of service on the Chamber Council and Chamber Board, pre and post his Presidency.

Whilst President, Nick was enthusiastic about collaborative working and maximising the opportunities that could then be developed by co-working. He understood the importance of business working with and supporting the public sector.

During his year as President and with the advent of the regional Local Enterprise Partnership, Nick established and chaired a working group to build collaboration between the three regional chambers of commerce, Doncaster, Barnsley & Rotherham, and Sheffield. This collaboration continues through successive Presidents.

Nick was also Chair of the South Yorkshire Green Business Club, which sought to spread good practice regarding business and the environment, and he also sat on the South Yorkshire Environmental Group.

Standing 6ft 3 inches tall, the gentle giant, believed in giving back to his community and supported several different charities as well as his civic duties.

He sat on the Board of Sheffield Futures; he was a trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and was a Trustee of Africa’s Gift (a charity that still operates globally and started in Sheffield).

Nick is survived by his wife Michelle and his two daughters, Rebecca and Gemma.

Nick’s funeral is taking place at 11am on 28th February 2024 at the Grenoside Crematorium, (North Chapel) Sheffield and after at Wortley Hall, Wortley, Sheffield. The family welcomes everyone to attend.
